oscar Cordero

Oscar Cordero immigrated to the US from Nicaragua in 1981 fleeing Civil War. Acculturating and dealing with the trauma of what they left behind, his family experienced a series of events which tested the human spirit and build resiliency. The trumpet was a gift which lit up and gave a voice of self-expression to a young boy who had already seen the grim realities of life. Music became his passion. Oscar excelled at the trumpet and it eventually led him to experience the Solid Gold Sound of the UCLA marching band from 1996 -1998.

Unfortunately, after losing a friend to suicide music took a backseat, but it always remained a nostalgia that he kept returning to as he dabbled in Soul Conference and Chola Orange with some local musicians from San Gabriel Valley. Soul Conference opened for MALO at the Majestic Ventura Theatre on Valentine’s Day 2009 and Jorge Santana, commented that the set transported him back to 1969 Woodstock.

Today, Oscar is a civil servant with the Department of Mental Health, never forgetting the impact that suicide leaves on those left behind. Oscar continues to hone his craft and has recently dove into music and was personally sought out by Ric Chavez, his high school friend to join Chavez Sound. Oscar is preparing to release his first project, which will take a listener past their normal scope of music.
